To clean a copper or steel scourer, follow these steps to remove grease, food particles, and prevent rust or tarnish:
General Cleaning Steps
1. Rinse Immediately After Use
Rinse the scourer under hot running water to remove food debris and grease.
Shake off excess water.
2. Soak (If Heavily Soiled)
Soak in a mixture of:
Hot water
A few drops of dish soap
Optional: 2 tablespoons of baking soda or white vinegar (for extra degreasing)
Let it sit for 10–15 minutes.
3. Scrub and Rinse
Use your fingers or an old toothbrush to scrub out stubborn gunk.
Rinse thoroughly with hot water.
4. Disinfect (Optional but Recommended)
Soak for 5 minutes in:
A solution of 1 part vinegar to 2 parts water, or
Diluted bleach (1 tablespoon per quart/liter of water, for steel only — avoid bleach on copper).
5. Dry Completely
Shake well and let air-dry completely to prevent rust.
Place in a dry spot, preferably near airflow.
Tips by Material
Copper scourers:
Avoid acidic cleaners (like lemon or bleach).
Use vinegar + salt paste for tarnish if needed, then rinse and dry.
Steel scourers:
More prone to rust—ensure they dry completely.
You can place them on a sponge holder or hang to drip-dry.
When to Replace
Replace when the scourer becomes:
Flattened or rusted
Smelly even after cleaning
Starts to scratch delicate surfaces (especially copper)
